Road conditions are generally pretty good until you get close to the mountain. And even there, they clear it pretty well. You'll need chains if there's a blizzard or something. In fact if the weather is really bad they close the road. You can always check on the Nevada Highway Patrol web|||It is about an hours drive. If chains are required, it will be the last few miles as you will have warm desert temperatures until you start up the mountains.
